The Experience
The morning air was thick with the smell of wet earth when we stepped onto the trail at Ecological Park Danaus. Our guide, Mariela, handed out binoculars—she knew exactly where to look for those sleepy sloths tucked high in the cecropia trees. You could hear toucans calling somewhere above us, and every so often a flash of blue wings zipped past—morpho butterflies, she said. The path itself is short, just about 600 meters, but it winds through real rainforest. Even my youngest kept up without any trouble.
We paused by a pond where caimans floated like logs. Mariela pointed out tiny red-eyed tree frogs clinging to leaves—honestly, I’d have missed them if she hadn’t shown us. The butterfly garden was next: warm and full of fluttering wings in every color you can think of. There were over forty species here; some landed right on our hands if we stood still enough. The botanical gardens surprised me too—over 600 types of plants, some with labels explaining their uses for medicine or cooking. It felt like a living classroom.
