Step-by-step itinerary

Night walk in tropical rainforest

  • Walk in the rainforest
  • Observe animals in natural habitat
  • See sloths and frogs

The Experience

La Fortuna's rainforest changes after dark. The animals that hide during the day move into the open, and a guide with a flashlight and telescope can find them by their calls and the reflection of their eyes in the beam. You walk the forest floor on a marked path, stopping when the guide spots movement or hears a sound—a sloth in the canopy, a frog calling from the undergrowth, the rustle of something crossing the trail ahead. The guide speaks English or Spanish and points out what you're looking at, how to spot it and what it's doing.

Two hours is long enough to cover ground without rushing, and short enough to fit into an evening without eating the whole night. The walk stays on accessible surfaces, so a stroller works for infants and small children, and the route itself is wheelchair accessible. You bring nothing but yourself; the guide provides the telescope and flashlights.
