The walk starts after dark, when the rainforest shifts into a different rhythm. A professional naturalist guide meets your group and moves through the reserve at whatever pace lets you actually see what's moving in the canopy and on the ground—no rushing to the next stop, no competing for the guide's attention with thirty other people. The nocturnal animals you're after (sloths hanging motionless in branches, red-eyed tree frogs clinging to leaves, basilisks frozen on the forest floor) reveal themselves slowly, and the private group format is what makes that possible.

The guide carries the flashlights and knows where to look—which trees hold roosting birds, which patches of leaf litter hide turtles, where owls tend to perch.
