Summary

Walk rainforest trails in Costa Rica to spot wild sloths & rare birds

You’ll wander gentle rainforest trails with a local guide, watching for wild sloths high above while listening for frogs and toucans nearby. Sip Costa Rican coffee with fresh pastry at the end — all ages welcome, strollers allowed. This is one of those quiet adventures where you notice more than you expected.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t think I’d get so quiet just watching a sloth move. But there we were, somewhere along this easy trail near La Fortuna, and our guide, Mariela, pointed up so gently I almost missed it. There was a three-toed sloth curled like a fuzzy comma in the branches, not even pretending to hurry. The air smelled like wet leaves and sweet mud — you know that smell after rain when everything feels green? I could hear frogs (Mariela called one “bluejeans,” which made me laugh) and somewhere, a toucan making that weird clacking sound. It’s funny how slow can feel like magic.

We walked maybe 1.4 km, but it felt less because Mariela kept stopping to show us things — tiny orchids hidden in moss, or the way the light hit a hummingbird’s wings for half a second. She knew every call and every bird; she said her grandmother taught her most of them. I tried to say “oso perezoso” (sloth) right and she grinned at my accent. If you’re thinking about a sloth tour in Costa Rica, this is really about letting yourself go slow too. There were families with little kids in strollers, nobody rushing anyone.

Afterwards they handed out coffee — strong and earthy — with something sweet and flaky I still can’t pronounce (but would eat again). My shoes were muddy but I didn’t care. Even now, sometimes when things get noisy at home I remember that hush under the trees, everyone looking up at the same sleepy animal. It sticks with you.
