The Experience
We were barely five minutes into the Ecogarden Arenal trail when our guide—Luis, I think—stopped and just pointed up. “There,” he whispered, like we were sharing a secret. Took me a second to spot it: a sloth, curled up in the crook of a cecropia tree, looking like it hadn’t moved since last week. The air smelled green—like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t quite place. Luis handed us binoculars so we could see its face (honestly, I didn’t expect to get that close).
After that first sloth sighting, everyone got a bit obsessed. We’d slow down for every rustle or bird call—there were these bright blue tanagers darting around—and Luis would quietly name each one.
