The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle and a stop in Glenbrook to stretch and grab coffee before the mountains. Echo Point comes first (the observation deck where the Three Sisters rock formation fills the frame), then Scenic World, where you ride the world's steepest passenger railway down into the rainforest canopy, glide above it on the Scenic Skyway, and walk a guided path through the trees. The railway alone is the kind of thing people book this tour for. It's not a simulation or a short ride, and the angle is steep enough that it stays in your head.

From there, Katoomba Cascades Waterfalls and Cahill's Lookout follow. Cahill's sits above the Megalong Valley and draws fewer crowds than Echo Point, so if you want sweeping views without the pavement, that's where the day settles for a moment. Leura comes next (a village with boutique shops where you buy your own lunch), then Sydney Zoo to see native Australian animals and get a free up-close digital photo with a koala. The ferry ride home is the last piece: you board on Sydney Harbour and pass under the Harbour Bridge on the way to Circular Quay, near the Opera House.

The whole day runs about 10 and a half hours including travel time. Your guide is certified and speaks English, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. If weather or extreme lines at Scenic World prevent some of the rides or views, the operator does not offer refunds, so that's a condition to know. Bring your own reusable water bottle. During peak periods a larger vehicle may replace the standard one.
