The experience

Your hotel pickup means the tour starts when you're ready, not when you've found the meeting point. The driver navigates you through the oldest part of Sydney (The Rocks, where the first European settlement began in 1788), and up to Observatory Park, the highest point in the inner city, before heading to the Harbour Bridge itself. From the Ivy Steps you get the view most postcards are built from: the bridge and the Opera House in the same frame, with Fort Denison (a former prison island turned restaurant) sitting in the water between them.

The tour then moves through the wealthy eastern suburbs in sequence: Woolloomooloo Wharf, once a working fish market and now home to five-star hotels and upmarket restaurants; Kings Cross, Sydney's old bohemian quarter; Double Bay, where the most expensive shops in Australia line streets filled with Ferraris and Bentleys; and Point Piper, where average property prices sit around $12 million. You'll pass Nielsen Park (Shark Beach), Watsons Bay with its hamlet of wooden cottages, and walk part of The Gap, where in winter and early summer you can spot humpback whales migrating along the coast. The guide points out the details that make each place distinct (the architecture, the history, the local life) rather than just naming them as you pass.

Bondi Beach comes next, the birthplace of Australian beach culture and the starting point of the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. You'll see Tamarama and Bronte beaches as well, then head inland to Paddington, Sydney's fashion district, where heritage-protected Victorian terraces house Australia's top designers. The final stop is Darling Harbour, the former working waterfront now lined with restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. Bottled water is provided throughout.
