The Experience

“You can try feeding him—just keep your hand flat!” our guide, Yuki, grinned as I hesitated in front of this very relaxed kangaroo at Sydney Zoo. The fur was softer than I expected and, honestly, the smell of eucalyptus mixed with animal hay kind of stuck to my jacket for the rest of the morning (not complaining). We all took turns with the koala photo—mine blinked right as they snapped it. Typical. But it made me laugh. There’s something about seeing these animals up close that makes Australia feel real in a way postcards never do.

The drive out from Sydney went by fast—Yuki told stories about growing up near Katoomba and pointed out where the bushfires had left marks on the trees. By the time we reached Echo Point, clouds were starting to break and suddenly there were the Three Sisters, just hanging there above the valley. Everyone got quiet for a second. It’s not just a view; it’s this whole feeling of space and blue haze and wind on your face. Some people tried to get selfies with all three rocks in frame—good luck with that.

Lunch in Leura was more relaxed than I thought it’d be. Yuki gave us a few suggestions (I picked a bakery that smelled like cinnamon) and let us wander for a bit. There’s something gentle about Leura—old shops, flowers everywhere, people waving even if you’re just passing through. After that came Scenic World: first the railway (which is honestly steeper than any rollercoaster I’ve tried), then gliding back up on the cableway while someone behind me gasped at every tree below. The Skyway was my favorite—just floating across Katoomba Falls with everyone pressed to the glass floor panels like kids at an aquarium.

I didn’t expect to feel so tired but so calm on the way back to Sydney—maybe it was all that air or maybe just how easy everything felt with Yuki translating little things for us (“No worries,” he kept saying). Even now I still think about that moment when everyone went quiet at Echo Point; you don’t really plan for those.
