The Experience

I’d been to Sydney before, but never made it out to the Blue Mountains — always figured it was too much hassle with the crowds and early starts. This time, we left after breakfast (which honestly felt like cheating), weaving out of the city just as everyone else seemed to be coming back in. Our guide, Dave, had this dry humor that set the tone right away. He pointed out Glenbrook as we rolled through — “best pies in NSW if you ask my mum” — and I almost believed him. The air changed fast: eucalyptus everywhere, sharp and sweet. It’s hard to describe unless you’ve smelled it yourself.

The first real walk was at Wentworth Falls. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t huff a bit on those stairs — they’re steep, and my legs still remind me sometimes. The mist off the waterfall stuck to my skin, cool but not cold, and there was this weird silence except for magpies somewhere up above. We spotted a couple of kangaroos lounging in the shade near Leura (they looked like they owned the place). Dave slowed us down so everyone could get a look — he knew exactly where they’d be hiding.

By the time we reached Echo Point Lookout in Katoomba, most tour buses had already left. The Three Sisters were just sitting there in that late afternoon light — kind of gold but also blue around the edges. I tried to take a photo but gave up; it never looks quite right on screen anyway. Someone next to me said their grandmother used to tell stories about those rocks — something about sisters turned to stone for protection? Not sure I got all the details straight but it made me see them differently.

We lingered at Lincoln’s Rock until sunset really hit — everything went quiet except for a few laughs from our group when someone tried (and failed) to set up a tripod on uneven ground. On the way back, tired but wired from all that air and space, I realized I hadn’t thought about emails or work once all day. That’s rare for me.
