The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell—eucalyptus and something sweet, maybe hay? We’d barely left Sydney before our guide, Mark (he’s got this dry sense of humor), pulled us into Calmsley Hill City Farm. I’m not usually a morning person but holding a warm mug of tea while a sleepy kangaroo blinked at me felt oddly grounding. The koalas were dozing in their tree like little grey clouds. I tried to get a photo but mostly just ended up grinning at them—hard not to.

Driving into the Blue Mountains, the light changed. It’s hard to describe—sort of blue-grey, soft around the edges. Mark took us to these lookouts I’d never heard of (definitely not the ones packed with crowds). At Katoomba, he pointed out a wedge-tailed eagle circling above the valley. Someone asked about the Three Sisters and he told us the Aboriginal story behind the name—his voice dropped a bit when he talked about it, like he wanted us to really listen. I still think about that view; it’s one of those places where you end up quiet without meaning to be.

Lunch was at this place called Boilerhouse Restaurant—huge windows looking out over Megalong Valley. The bread was warm and crusty, and my main had these herbs I couldn’t quite place (Mark said they’re local). If you skip lunch there’s a café but honestly, sitting there with everyone sharing stories felt like half the reason to go for the full option. Afterward we stopped at Govetts Leap—the waterfall actually roars if you listen long enough—and then wandered through Blue Mountains Botanic Garden. It was cooler up there; I kept brushing past damp leaves that smelled almost minty.

We headed back as the sun dipped behind the hills. Someone nodded off in their seat (not naming names). The whole day felt like it unfolded slower than usual—maybe because someone else was driving or maybe just because there was so much sky out there.
