Step-by-step itinerary
Wildlife and cultural tour in Wyoming
- Explore Grand Teton National Park
- Visit National Bighorn Sheep Center
- Have lunch in Dubois
- View Native American petroglyphs
- Return to Jackson Hole hotel
The experience
Start from your Jackson Hole hotel in the morning and head into Grand Teton National Park with a professional guide and a small group of no more than 10 people. The route pushes north into Dubois, Wyoming, where the landscape opens up for wildlife viewing. Bighorn sheep, moose, wolves, bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, eagles and fox move through this country, and the guide knows where to look and when to stop. If the sheep don't show during the drive (they're easier to spot in winter), you'll visit the National Bighorn Sheep Center in Dubois to learn about Rocky Mountain bighorns, the largest wild sheep in North America, identifiable by their massive curled horns.
Lunch happens in Dubois at a local restaurant in the heart of cowboy country. After eating, the tour heads to Native American petroglyphs carved into stone by the Shoshone Indians over 1,500 years ago. These rock drawings of animals and other objects are sacred to the Eastern Shoshone of the Wind River Reservation. A short hike takes you closer to the carvings. If you prefer not to walk, the guide provides binoculars so you can see many of the petroglyphs from the vehicle. The day ends with hotel drop-off back in Jackson Hole.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
What wildlife might I see on this tour from Jackson Hole?
Bighorn sheep, moose, wolves, bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, eagles and fox all move through Grand Teton and the Dubois area. Sightings depend on the season and where the animals are on any given day. If bighorn sheep don't appear during the drive, the Bighorn Sheep Center visit guarantees you'll learn about them up close.
How long is the full day, and what time does it end?
The tour runs 8 to 10 hours total. Hotel pickup starts the day, and you're dropped back at your Jackson Hole hotel at the end, so plan for most of your daylight.
Are the Native American petroglyphs accessible if I don't want to hike?
Yes. A short hike takes you closer to the carvings, but if you prefer not to walk, the guide provides binoculars from the vehicle so you can see many of the petroglyphs from there.
What's included in the tour price?
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Jackson Hole, a professional guide, lunch at a restaurant in Dubois, and entry to the National Bighorn Sheep Center are included. National Park entrance fees are separate and depend on your citizenship. You'll choose the option that applies when you book.
Is this tour suitable for families with young children?
Children 5 years and older can join. Younger children are not permitted on this public tour. The day is long, 8 to 10 hours, so consider whether your child can manage the time in the vehicle and the short walk to the petroglyphs.
