The experience
The tour opens with a snowshoe adventure into Grand Teton's backcountry, where you'll read animal tracks and signs in the snow while your guide discusses winter ecology and snow science. The pace stays leisurely if you book the group option, and the operator can adjust the energy level on private tours. You'll carry trekking poles and wear gaiters to manage the terrain, and the guide brings specimens and iPads to deepen the conversation as you move through the landscape.
After a lunch break, you switch into a custom safari-style vehicle outfitted with roof hatches and oversized windows so everyone gets a view. The afternoon is built around wildlife: the guide pursues bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer, coyotes, foxes, eagles and trumpeter swans, giving you time to photograph and ask questions. The vehicle's professional optics (binoculars and spotting scopes) stay at your disposal, and the guide steers the discussion toward topics that interest you.
The naturalist guides carry science backgrounds and years of experience interpreting the flora, fauna, geology and human history of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Bottled water, coffee or tea, and high-quality snacks sustain you through both halves of the day. Children ages 9 and up are welcome. Families with children 8 and under need to book a private tour for the flexibility the day demands.
