Snake River float trip in Grand Teton: Wildlife and peaks
Float the Snake River and watch wildlife move through their habitats
A scenic float trip on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park is a guided two-hour journey through open and forested river landscapes where you watch for moose, bald eagles, osprey and other wildlife while a guide explains the region's geology, history and local ecology. The trip departs from Deadman's Bar below Snake River Outlook, includes a life jacket, and runs multiple times daily so you can pick a departure that fits your schedule. Children ages 5 and up are welcome.
The experience
The float starts at Deadman's Bar, just below Snake River Outlook, where your guide meets you and walks through the basics before you push off into the water. The guide navigates the current while pointing out the most impressive peaks of the Teton Range and the wildlife moving along the riverbanks: bald eagles and osprey are common sightings, and moose often appear in the forested sections. The river itself is calm enough for families. There are no rapids or whitewater, just the gentle flow that lets you stay alert to what's moving on shore.
Two hours on the water means you cover ground without rushing, moving through both open meadow and tree-lined sections where different animals tend to congregate. Your guide shares the history and geology of Jackson Hole as you float, connecting what you're seeing to how the landscape was shaped. A life jacket is provided and worn throughout, and the trip is suitable for all fitness levels. You're sitting in the boat, not paddling or swimming.
Multiple departures run each day, so you can book an early morning slot to catch wildlife at their most active, or a later time if you want to fit other park activities into the same day. The whole outing, including the setup and return, takes about two and a half hours from start to finish.
