The Experience

The tour departs in early morning from your Jackson or Teton Village accommodation, which is when wildlife moves through the valley. You'll drive along Gros Ventre Road with the Teton peaks as backdrop, stopping at Antelope Flats and other vantage points where moose, pronghorn, bison and other animals are commonly spotted. The guide knows where to look and what time of day makes a sighting likely — a difference that matters when you've traveled to see them.

Oxbow Bend is the centerpiece: a curve in the Snake River where the water sits still enough to mirror Mt. Moran and the Teton range. White pelicans, trumpeter swans and blue herons gather here regularly; grizzly bears, fox and beaver appear often enough that the guide watches for them. Jackson Lake, fed by the Snake River from the north, sits at the base of the mountains and gives you the scale of the park from the water's edge. Jenny Lake, a glacial moraine lake, rounds out the stops — each one shows a different face of the park.

Mormon Row Historic District breaks up the drive: original homestead structures and the iconic Moulton barns built by Mormon settlers in the early 1900s stand against the mountain backdrop. The Teton range itself — 11,000 to 13,000+ feet with no foothills between them and the valley — rises straight up from the ground where you stand, which is the geography that makes this park distinct.
