The guide was supposed to pick us up at 5:45am, but the fog rolled in thicker than anyone expected, and he called to say we'd start fifteen minutes late instead. That's the thing about a Grand Teton wildlife safari from Jackson Hole — you're chasing animals on their schedule, not a clock. Dawn and dusk are when they feed, so that's when the naturalist guide takes you out, and sometimes the weather has other ideas. But that delay meant we caught the elk moving into the meadow just as the light turned gold, which we might have missed otherwise. The tour runs year-round, so if you're visiting in June through mid-September, you'll ride in an open-air safari-style vehicle — the kind that lets you stand up and scan the slopes without glass between you and the view. Come in winter or spring, and you're in an enclosed, heated vehicle instead, which sounds like a trade-off until you realize you're watching grizzly bears and wolves from a warm seat while snow falls outside.

The group stays small — 10 to 12 people max — which means the guide can actually stop when someone spots movement in the trees, and you're not jostling for position with thirty other phones. Your naturalist covers the geology and ecology as you go, pointing out why the Tetons rise so sharp and sudden, what the different rock tells you about the valley's history. Sightings change with the season: moose and elk year-round, bighorn sheep on the high slopes, wolves if you're lucky, bald eagles in spring and summer, and both grizzly and black bears when the berries come in. Mormon Row — the historic district with the T.A. Moulton Barn, the one everyone photographs — gets included on tours from March through November; in winter, snow covers the access road, so those stops don't happen. The guide will stop at one of the two famous barns depending on conditions and light, and you get time to shoot photos of the weathered wood and the mountains behind it.

Binoculars and a scope are provided, so you don't need your own, and the vehicle carries snacks, bottled water, and soda for the ride. If you're staying in an approved Jackson Hole area hotel between November and mid-May, pickup is included — the guide comes to you. Wear sturdy shoes if you're going in summer; dress in full winter gear if you're going when snow is on the ground. The tour isn't recommended if you have serious back problems, since the vehicle moves over rough terrain and the pace is set by where the animals are, not by comfort. Kids under five aren't allowed, but otherwise it's open to any fitness level — you're sitting most of the time, and the guide does the spotting work.
