The experience

The tour leaves Jackson Hole at dawn or dusk: the two hours when grizzly bears, wolves, moose, bison and elk move to feed. A naturalist guide drives a small group of up to 12 through Grand Teton National Park, stopping to glass for animals and explain the park's geology and human history. Sightings shift with the season: summer brings bald eagles, sandhill cranes and osprey. Winter narrows the roster but concentrates the animals that stay. The guide carries binoculars and a scope. You get your own pair to scan the sagebrush and meadows.

From June through mid-September, the vehicle is an open-air safari style rig that lets you stand and turn without glass between you and the landscape. Mid-September through May, you ride in an enclosed, heated and air-conditioned vehicle. A practical shift that keeps winter tours running when the cold would otherwise stop them. Hotel pickup from approved Jackson Hole area runs November through mid-May. Summer guests meet at a central point. The tour runs four hours and includes snacks, bottled water and soda.

Mormon Row Historic District stops on the itinerary March through November, weather permitting: a chance to photograph the T.A. Moulton Barn, one of the most famous barns in the world and the backdrop for countless Teton images. December through February, snow coverage closes that stop, and the route focuses entirely on the park interior and the animals that winter there.

What animals might I actually see on a Grand Teton safari tour?

Grizzly and black bears, wolves, moose, bison, elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer and pronghorn live in the park year-round. Bald and golden eagles, sandhill cranes, osprey, hawks and owls appear in spring and summer. Sightings depend on season and animal movement, so the guide cannot guarantee any specific species, but dawn and dusk tours time the tour to peak feeding hours when wildlife is most active.
