The experience

You drive your own car and the app does the guiding. After booking, download the Action Tour Guide app, enter your password, and load the tour while connected to WiFi or mobile data. Once downloaded, the GPS-triggered audio plays automatically as you move: no need to look at your phone or plan stops in advance. The commentary flows through your car's speakers via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the map on your phone shows the route and upcoming stops. One purchase covers everyone in your vehicle, so a family of four pays once, not per person.

The Grand Teton section covers over 50 miles and 50+ audio stories, taking 3 to 5 hours depending on how long you linger at each stop. You'll pass Teton Village, drive through the Laurence S. Rockefeller Preserve where elk roam, stop at the Chapel of the Transfiguration (a single-room log church with mountain views), and reach Jenny Lake, one of the park's most popular destinations. The route includes Oxbow Bend where the Snake River makes a U-turn, the National Elk Refuge where wildlife is easiest to spot in early morning or dusk, and overlooks of Jackson Lake and the Tetons. The Yellowstone section is equally detailed, with stops at Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring (a massive hot spring ringed with color), Mammoth Hot Springs, Norris Geyser Basin (the oldest and hottest in the park), and Lamar Valley, where bison are nearly guaranteed and wolves occasionally appear. You'll also hear about Firehole River, a naturally heated river, Fountain Paint Pot with its constantly shifting mud, and nearly 350 waterfalls scattered throughout the park.

Start whenever suits your schedule (early morning, midday, or across multiple days), and pause as long as you need. The app works offline with GPS guidance, so you don't need cellular service once the tour is downloaded. You can revisit the audio stories, photos and details anytime after your trip, and the lifetime access means you can return to either park years later and use the same tour. Entrance fees, parking, food and car rental are separate. Check the parks' opening hours before you visit.

Is this one for you?You drive your own car and control the pace entirely: start and stop whenever you want, which works well if you're staying in the area or have a rental. If you don't have a vehicle, you'll need to arrange one separately. The tour is built for self-driving, not for those relying on shuttles or group buses.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.

Can I start the tour from anywhere, or do I have to begin at the designated starting point?

You can join the route anywhere along the path shown in the app. The starting point is suggested but not required. The GPS will pick up the audio stories as you drive through each location.

What happens if I lose cell service or WiFi while I'm driving?

The tour works completely offline once you download it. GPS guidance and audio stories play without any connection, so losing signal won't interrupt your experience.

Does the price cover just one person, or everyone traveling in the car?

One purchase covers everyone in your vehicle. You don't pay per person: your whole family or group listens to the same tour on a single phone connected to the car's speakers.

How long does it take to complete both the Grand Teton and Yellowstone tours?

Each tour takes 3 to 5 hours depending on how long you stop at each location. You can split them across different days or combine them into a longer trip. The app lets you pause and resume anytime.

What devices does the tour app work on?

The Action Tour Guide app runs on iPhone with iOS 15 or newer, Android version 9 or newer, or a GPS-enabled iPad or tablet with cellular capability. Audio plays through your car's Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
