The Experience

We stepped onto the speedboat in Phuket still half-awake, clutching coffee and sunscreen, and suddenly we were flying over the water — spray on my face, hair everywhere. The first stop was Hong Island (Krabi), where our guide Somchai grinned at us like he’d just found treasure. The sand here is so white it almost hurts your eyes, and I kept noticing how quiet it was except for kids laughing somewhere behind the palm trees. I tried snorkeling but mostly floated, watching tiny fish dart around my toes. It’s funny — you think you’ll be busy taking photos but end up just staring at the water.

After that, we zipped across Phang Nga Bay toward Panyee Island. You can smell fried garlic before you even see the floating village. Lunch was simple but good: fresh fish with chili and lime — I tried to copy how Somchai mixed his sauce but gave up halfway (too spicy for me). There’s something about eating while the whole place rocks gently under your feet; it makes you slow down. At one point a local kid waved from a wooden walkway and dropped his soccer ball into the bay — everyone laughed when he dove in after it.

Canoeing around Talu Island was quieter than I expected — just the sound of paddles tapping against limestone caves. Our guide pointed out these weird rock shapes that looked like animals if you squinted (he insisted one was a sleeping dog; I’m not convinced). Then came James Bond Island itself — honestly smaller than I imagined from the movie but somehow more dramatic in person, especially with thunderclouds rolling in behind it. We drifted close enough to see tiny crabs skittering over rocks. By late afternoon my skin felt salty and tired in that way that means you’ve really been outside all day. On the ride back to Phuket I watched light flicker off the bay and tried to memorize it all — still can’t believe places like this exist, you know?
