The experience
The limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay rise out of the water like a film set nobody finished building. You're in a kayak, paddle in hand, moving through a narrow gap in the rock where the light turns green and the sound of your own breathing gets loud. Your guide sits behind you in the two-person kayak, steering you into what locals call a "hong": a hidden lagoon trapped inside the island, ringed by cliffs so steep they look painted on. Macaques watch from the branches above. The water is still enough to see the bottom. This is the kayaking part of the Twilight Sea Canoe tour, and it happens in the afternoon, before the crowds thin out and before the light starts to change.
The day starts with a pickup from your Phuket hotel in an air-conditioned minivan. They run pickups across the whole island, including Khao Lak if you're staying north. You meet at Ao Po Pier by 30 minutes before departure, and then you're on a double-decker boat heading out into the bay. Breakfast should be light.
