The Experience

The limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay rise out of the water like a film set nobody finished building. You're in a kayak, paddle in hand, moving through a narrow gap in the rock where the light turns green and the sound of your own breathing gets loud. Your guide sits behind you in the two-person kayak, steering you into what locals call a "hong"—a hidden lagoon trapped inside the island, ringed by cliffs so steep they look painted on. Macaques watch from the branches above. The water is still enough to see the bottom. This is the kayaking part of the Twilight Sea Canoe tour, and it happens in the afternoon, before the crowds thin out and before the light starts to change.

The day starts with a pickup from your Phuket hotel in an air-conditioned minivan—they run pickups across the whole island, including Khao Lak if you're staying north. You meet at Ao Po Pier by 30 minutes before departure, and then you're on a double-decker boat heading out into the bay. Breakfast should be light; lunch comes onboard, a buffet that accounts for dietary preferences, along with snacks, fruit and water. The guides brief you on the geology of Phang Nga while you eat—the limestone formations, how to enter the caves safely, what you're about to see. It's the kind of detail that makes the afternoon make sense instead of just happening to you.

After the kayaking session at Panak Island, the boat moves to James Bond Island, the rock pinnacle called Koh Tapu that starred in "The Man with the Golden Gun." The difference between a 2pm visit and a 5pm visit is the difference between standing in a crowd and standing in front of something. By the time you get there, most of the other tour boats have already left. You see the two forest-covered islands, Khao Phing Kan, the way they look when the light is turning gold and the bay is quieter. On the way back to Ao Po Pier, the boat slows down and the crew kills the engine. The water goes dark. If the conditions are right—and they often are in Phang Nga—you'll see dinoflagellates, bioluminescent plankton that glow when they move. Dip your hand in the water and it trails light. It's the kind of thing that sounds made up until you see it. The driver meets you at the pier and takes you back to your hotel, usually arriving late evening. The whole day runs about eight hours from pickup to dropoff.
