The Experience
So you've got a day free in Phuket and you're tired of the beach — yeah, I get it. The speedboat leaves Phuket Boat Lagoon early, and you're already moving through Phang Nga Bay before the tour buses show up. The limestone karsts rise straight up out of the water like someone dropped a mountain range and forgot to pick it up, and the boat cuts between them fast enough that you feel the spray but slow enough that you actually see what's happening. Twenty to thirty people on the boat depending on which one you get, an English-speaking guide, and a crew that knows the tides.
First real stop is Koh Hong — the name means "room" in Thai, and that's what you're looking for: these collapsed cave systems that open to the sky, surrounded by walls so tall you have to crane your neck. You're in a fibreglass kayak by then, paddling into the hongs with a paddle guide who knows where the light hits and where the water gets deep. It's quiet in there, just the paddle and the echo. After that comes James Bond Island, the actual Koh Ta-pu from The Man with the Golden Gun — that needle-shaped rock you've probably seen in a hundred photos. The whole area around it is worth the stop, and you get time to take the pictures everyone takes.
Lunch happens on Koh Panyee, a fishing village built entirely on stilts over the water. Hundreds of houses, restaurants, shops, all of them floating. You eat Thai buffet style — curry, rice, vegetables, fruit — sitting on the platform while the village moves around you. It's the kind of place that feels like you've slipped into someone else's day, except the someone else is used to tourists and the food is good. After lunch you're back on the speedboat past mangrove forests, then you paddle again through Diamond Cave and deeper into Koh Panak, the kind of spot where the guide points out things you'd miss alone.
The last stop is Koh Rang Yai, a quieter island about five kilometers off Phuket's east coast with a one-kilometer beach. The water's warm — usually between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius — and you can actually swim without thinking about it. If the sea's rough that day, you go to Naka Island instead, which is fine. The whole thing runs about eight hours door to door, and you're back at your hotel by late afternoon. Life jacket, kayak gear, soft drinks and fresh fruit all included; the guide handles the timing and the route changes if the weather shifts.
