The Experience

The boat leaves Portimão Marina at check-in, and within minutes you're past the harbor mouth heading toward the cliffs. Your skipper points out Ferragudo village and its fort on the way — a quick stop so you can see how the old town sits above the water, then the boat turns toward the open coast. The guide talks through the bird names and which beaches belong to which stretch of sand, and you start to understand how much of the Algarve you're about to see in two hours.

Four photo stops happen before you reach Benagil Cave itself, each one a different angle on the same golden cliffs and rock formations. The cave entrance is the kind of thing you've seen in photos — a massive stone arch opening into a cathedral of limestone — but being inside it on the water, with the skipper cutting the engine so you hear the echo, is different. Light comes through a hole in the roof and hits the sand floor inside. You get time to look, to take pictures, and to let it sink in that you're actually there.

After Benagil, the boat heads to Praia da Marinha, which has won awards for being one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. It's a narrow strip of sand between two rock walls, and the water is clear enough to see the bottom. You get a swim stop here — time to cool off before the return journey back to Portimão. The ride back gives you a different view of the same coastline, and by the time you're back at the marina, the two hours have moved faster than you'd expect.
