The experience

I still feel the salt on my skin from that morning in Portimão. We squeezed onto the little boat (maybe ten of us, tops), and our guide João grinned like he knew something we didn’t. The engine started up and we slipped out of the marina, past those big white yachts, into water that looked almost too blue. I could smell sunscreen and something briny, like seaweed drying in the sun. João pointed at a crumbling fort on the cliffs and said his grandfather used to fish here before tourists ever came for the Benagil Caves. I tried to imagine that. Just boats and silence.

The ride was quick but jumpy. Every time we ducked into a new cave, I’d catch this echo: our voices bouncing off rock, then fading under dripping water. The Benagil Cave itself was wild: sunlight pouring through that round hole in the ceiling, lighting up sand so gold it almost glowed. João let us drift inside for a bit longer than planned (he said “don’t tell my boss”), and I just sat there listening to everyone go quiet for once.
