The experience

The boat leaves Pier A at Marina de Portimão and heads upriver toward Silves. Along the way, the captain points out the 17th-century Fort of São João in Ferragudo, built to defend the river estuary and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and the two iron bridges that cross the Arade: one a 19th-century road bridge built by a French company, the other a railway bridge completed in 1922 that opened the line to Lagos. At Silves, you have roughly 1.5 hours to move at your own pace. The medieval castle dominates the town, and there's a museum, local restaurants serving regional food, and narrow streets to walk. On the return to Portimão, you get a different view of the river mouth and the city's waterfront from the downstream perspective.
