The experience

Your hotel pickup happens in the morning, and the first three hours move through Auckland's city centre and North Shore. You travel up Queen Street past iconic buildings, through the heritage homes of Ponsonby, and across the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Devonport, where Mount Victoria Reserve gives you views of both the city and the Hauraki Gulf. Devonport itself is a white sand beach where you can stop for coffee if you want one (at your own cost). The guide then takes you past Westhaven Marina, the Southern Hemisphere's largest yacht marina, and through Auckland Domain, the city's biggest inner-city park, before circling back through Parnell Village.

The afternoon shifts to nature. You drive about 45 minutes west to the Waitakere Ranges, where you walk through rainforest and hear the bird calls while the guide explains the flora and fauna. Then comes Piha Beach, a dramatic black sand beach where you have time to walk along the shore. Afternoon tea (biscuits, tea, coffee or juice) is included and served during this part of the day. The whole tour is about eight and a half hours from pickup to drop-off, with roughly two hours of easy walking spread across both sections.

Small group size means the guide can answer questions and adjust the pace. The tour operates in all weather, so bring layers and waterproof gear if rain is forecast. Children and infants are welcome.
