What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the light — kind of silvery as we crossed Auckland Harbour Bridge, with Rangitoto Island just sitting out there like it’s always been. Our guide, Mark, kept pointing out things I’d have missed: old villas in Parnell, boats bobbing near Takapuna. He knew weird little facts about the volcanic craters under our feet. At one point he just stopped talking so we could watch the city slide by through the window — honestly, that silence felt good.

We rolled through Titirangi (I still can’t pronounce that right) and suddenly it was all ferns and misty green. The Waitakere Ranges feel close but different — like you’re out of the city but not lost. At Arataki Visitor Centre, Mark handed out these crumbly biscuits (I think they called them Afghans?) and we looked back at Auckland from way up high.
