The experience

The tour starts from your hotel or cruise ship and moves through Auckland's central sights: Queen Street dividing the business district, a waterfront drive along Waitemata Harbour, and Auckland Domain, the city's oldest park built inside an extinct volcano's crater. The Domain holds 75 hectares of green space and a Winter Garden with heated tropical houses full of orchids, palms and bromeliads. From there the route heads west across the Auckland Harbour Bridge toward the Waitakere Ranges.

The Scenic Drive through the Waitakere Ranges is where the landscape shifts. You stop at the Arataki Visitor Centre, which sits at the only vantage point in Auckland where you can see both the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean at once. The centre has information on the area's natural and cultural history, and a fine Kauri tree stands nearby. From here, a short walk leads to Muriwai Beach, where a viewing platform sits directly above a gannet colony. The birds nest on the rocks below while the Tasman Sea spreads out beyond. On the return, the tour can include a stop at a local winery if that interests you.
