The experience

The tour starts at the Ferry Building on Queens Wharf or from one of four central pickup locations throughout downtown. Your guide delivers detailed local commentary as the coach heads along the waterfront past Viaduct Harbour (where the America's Cup yachts are moored and restaurants line the water), and through the Wynyard Quarter, now a restaurant and market precinct. The route then reaches Westhaven Marina, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, where you stop for photos of the Harbour Bridge and the marina itself.

From there the coach crosses the Harbour Bridge to the North Shore and Northcote Point, where Shoal Bay offers arguably the best views of Auckland City across the water. An optional coffee stop lets you grab takeaway drinks and snacks to bring back to the bus. The tour then moves through Ponsonby, a Victorian and Edwardian suburb full of heritage buildings and independent shops, before heading to the volcanic summits. At Mt Eden you walk 5 to 10 minutes from the parking lot to the summit for elevated views of the city. The Auckland Domain and War Memorial Museum are pointed out from the coach (the museum itself requires several hours to visit properly). The route continues through Parnell, past the rose gardens if flowers are in bloom, then along the waterfront through Mission Bay, Kohimarama Beach, and the seaside village of Saint Heliers, where Achilles Point gives views out over the Hauraki Gulf islands.

The coach returns downtown along tree-lined Symonds Street, passing the University of Auckland, then through the city center where the guide points out the Art Gallery, heritage buildings like the Town Hall and Civic Theater, and the main shopping streets. You finish back at the Ferry Building or can be dropped at your hotel if you're staying downtown. The commentary covers Auckland's geography, history and local life, delivered with humor throughout.

What's the best viewpoint for photos of Auckland Harbour and the bridge?

Westhaven Marina and Shoal Bay in Northcote Point both offer excellent photo stops: Westhaven shows the bridge and marina together, while Shoal Bay across the water gives the classic view of the city skyline from the North Shore.

Do I need to get out of the coach to see the volcanoes?

At Mt Eden you walk 5 to 10 minutes from the parking lot to reach the summit viewpoint. It's optional but worth the short walk for the elevated city views. The Auckland Domain is viewed from the coach.

Can I be picked up from my hotel instead of the Ferry Building?
