The Experience
The day starts at your hotel and moves through Auckland's geography in a sequence that makes sense. Mount Eden—Maungawhau in Māori—is an extinct volcano 196 metres high, the tallest in the region, with a flat track around its 50-metre crater so you can walk the rim and see the city spread out in all directions without steep climbing. From there, the route takes you to Westhaven Marina, the largest yacht marina in the Southern Hemisphere, where nearly 2,000 yachts sit moored and the promenade opens onto views of the Sky Tower and Harbour Bridge framed for photographs.
The middle of the tour moves through gardens and green space. The Domain Wintergarden holds two glass conservatories—one temperate, one tropical and heated to 28°C—with a courtyard of sculptures and a pond between them, and year-round flower displays. Bastion Point's Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park sits on 49 hectares overlooking Waitemata Harbour and Rangitoto Island, with an obelisk and mirrored pond set into maintained gardens. Parnell Gardens, one of Auckland's largest, holds over 5,000 blooming roses and the city's biggest pōhutukawa tree, a native giant standing above the harbour.
The tour closes at the Auckland Harbour Bridge, opened in 1959 and 1,020 metres long, connecting the central city to the North Shore across Waitemata Harbour. The bridge itself is the landmark—a vital transport link and the frame for the city's skyline, Rangitoto Island, and the water below.
