The experience

The tour starts at Westhaven Marina, where you photograph the Auckland Harbour Bridge from the waterfront with the city skyline behind it, then walk past the home of 1,800 boats to see how the harbour frames the city. From there, the route climbs Mount Eden (Maungawhau), a volcanic cone in the middle of Auckland, for a 360° view of the surrounding area. The crater itself is a key feature of the site. The drive then passes through Auckland Domain, one of the city's oldest and largest public parks at 75 hectares, built inside another volcanic crater. The Auckland War Memorial Museum sits at the highest point of the Domain and overlooks the whole park.

The second half of the tour takes you to Mission Bay, a sandy beach with views across the Waitematā Harbour to Rangitoto Island, a dormant volcano. This is the spot most visitors choose for photos of the Auckland skyline and the water. The final stop is Savage Memorial Park on the slopes of Mount Victoria in Devonport, a landscaped memorial to New Zealand's Prime Minister from 1935 to 1940, with its own views back across the harbour and the city.
