The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell of salt and engine oil at Westhaven Marina — not exactly what I pictured for Auckland, but it felt real. Boats everywhere, masts clinking in the wind. Our guide, Manu, waved us over with a grin and pointed out which ones he’d sailed on as a kid. I liked that he didn’t rush us; we just stood there for a bit, watching someone untangle a fishing net. It’s funny how you can feel like you’re somewhere new just by listening to the way people talk about their own city.

Mount Eden was next — that steep walk up is no joke if you’ve had too much breakfast (guilty). The crater at the top is deeper than it looks in photos. You get this wide view of Auckland stretching out in all directions, and the wind up there is sharp enough to wake you up if you’re still jet-lagged. Manu told us some Māori history about the volcanoes — I tried repeating one of the names and he laughed (I definitely butchered it). There’s something about standing on an old volcano that makes everything else seem smaller for a minute.

I didn’t expect to love the Wintergardens so much — warm air thick with green smells inside those glasshouses, orchids everywhere. Outside, we wandered past statues and this little pond where two kids were trying to count goldfish. Lunch was Mission Bay: fish and chips on a bench facing Rangitoto Island. Seagulls everywhere (don’t trust them). After that we stopped at Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park — flowers lined up in perfect rows and locals walking dogs who seemed to know everyone.

The Arataki Visitor Centre felt like stepping into another world — suddenly it’s all ferns and birdsong instead of city noise. The Waitakere Ranges are close enough to Auckland that you forget how wild they are until you’re actually there. Piha Beach was last: black sand under bare feet (hot!), surfers out past Lion Rock, wind whipping hair into my mouth every time I tried to take a photo. We just sat for a while watching waves crash — I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
