The Experience
I’ll be honest, I signed up for this Rotorua day trip from Auckland mostly because I’d seen those wild photos of Wai-O-Tapu — all neon pools and steam. But actually being there, walking the paths with our guide (her name was Mere, she grew up around here), it felt different. The air smelled like eggs — not in a bad way, just sharp and earthy. We stopped by the Champagne Pool and Mere told us how deep it goes. I tried to guess but was way off; she just grinned and let me peer into the orange rimmed water till my glasses fogged up.
We wandered past bubbling mud that sounded like someone slurping soup (sorry, that’s exactly what it reminded me of). At one point, a gust of wind blew warm mist right at us — my hair still smelled faintly sulfurous hours later. Lunch was quick in Rotorua town, nothing fancy but good to sit down after all that walking. Then Te Puia: more steam, but also the Pōhutu Geyser going off like a kettle left too long. There were carvings everywhere; I kept running my fingers along them when no one was looking.
The Māori performance at Te Puia wasn’t what I expected — there’s this energy when they do the haka that kind of vibrates through you. The songs were beautiful too. Our group got invited to try poi dancing; I nearly hit myself in the face but everyone laughed, including the performers. On the drive back to Auckland I watched the clouds rolling over green hills and thought about how old all this land is, and how much I still don’t know about it. It sticks with you.
