The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it felt in the van—just a handful of us, not squished together like sardines. Our driver, John (he called himself “your Kiwi uncle for the day”), had this way of pointing out odd facts about the landscape that made me look twice. Somewhere past Hamilton, the farmland turned misty and green and I caught this earthy smell through the window—like wet grass and something ancient underneath.

We reached Rotorua around mid-morning. Te Puia felt alive—steam hissing up from vents, kids laughing near bubbling mud pools. At the Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, we watched carvers working on what looked like impossibly intricate patterns; one of them smiled when I tried to pronounce “whakairo” (I definitely mangled it). Lunch was a buffet in a warm café overlooking the valley—nothing fancy but honestly good after all that road time. We barely stopped at Lake Rotorua but managed a quick photo; the water had this silvery look under thick clouds.

Waitomo Caves was next. It’s hard to describe that first step into the dark—cool air on your face, echoes bouncing off limestone walls. The guide switched off her torch and suddenly there were thousands of tiny blue lights above us, like someone scattered stars across a cave ceiling. Floating out by boat in silence (well, except for someone’s stomach rumbling), I remember thinking how strange it is to feel so small and so lucky at once. The drive back was mostly quiet; everyone sort of lost in their own thoughts or asleep with heads bobbing against leather seats.
