The experience

You're picked up from your Auckland hotel and driven through the Waikato countryside toward Rotorua: a 3.5-hour journey that sets the pace for the day. The minivan is air-conditioned and bottled water is provided. Once in Rotorua, the guide takes you through the city's streets before arriving at Te Puia, where steam rises from the earth and the scent of sulfur announces the geothermal activity ahead. You walk through the site with your guide, learning the significance of each bubbling mud pool and the iconic Pōhutu Geyser as it shoots water high into the sky.

At Te Puia's carved meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua, you watch a cultural performance that includes a Pōhiri (traditional Māori welcome), waiata, mōteatea, poi and haka: the movements and chants that carry the spirit of Aotearoa's first people. The Kiwi Conservation Centre is also part of the Te Puia experience, where you see New Zealand's native bird. After the performance, you have time to buy lunch at Te Puia's café at your own cost. The guide then leads you to Whakarewarewa, The Living Māori Village, where local guides share stories of daily life, traditional practices, and how the community lives within the geothermal landscape.

The return journey to Auckland is a relaxed drive back through the countryside, arriving in the evening. The whole day runs roughly 11 to 12 hours from pickup to drop-off, which means an early start but leaves your evening free once you're back in the city.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 15 years); Infant (under 5).

What exactly happens at the haka performance at Te Puia?

The performance takes place in Te Aronui a Rua, the meeting house, and includes a Pōhiri (traditional welcome), waiata (song), mōteatea (traditional chant), poi and haka. It's a live cultural show, not a video or demonstration.

Can I see the Pōhutu Geyser erupt, or is it not guaranteed?

Pōhutu is an active geyser at Te Puia and you will see the geothermal activity: steam, mud pools and the geyser itself. The exact timing and height of eruptions vary with natural conditions, but the site's geothermal power is always visible.

Is lunch included, or do I need to bring my own food?

Lunch is not included. After the cultural performance at Te Puia, you have time to eat at Te Puia's café, where you pay for your meal separately.

How far is the walk around Te Puia and Whakarewarewa?

Both sites involve walking through the geothermal landscape and village areas with your guide. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though the terrain includes uneven ground and steam vents, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?

Included are hotel pickup and return transport from Auckland, entry to both Te Puia and Whakarewarewa with guided experiences, the haka performance, a live English-speaking guide, air-conditioned vehicle and bottled water. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are at your own cost.
