The Experience

I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect to care so much about a movie set. But as soon as we left Auckland behind and the hills around Matamata started rolling out, it felt like stepping sideways into some other world. Our driver, Mark (who’d clearly done this a hundred times but still seemed to enjoy it), kept tossing out little facts about Waikato farms and sheep breeds. We stopped at a roadside café for coffee — not fancy, just warm and strong, with that slightly sweet smell of baking bread in the air.

Walking into Hobbiton was surreal. The grass was impossibly green, almost cartoon-bright, and there were flowers everywhere — real ones, not props. Our local guide pointed out tiny details: hand-painted mailboxes, laundry lines with shirts pegged up like someone might actually come collect them. I tried to pronounce “Matamata” properly; Li laughed when I butchered it (sorry, Li). We took turns posing at Bilbo’s gate, but honestly I liked watching people more than posing myself. There was ginger beer waiting at the Green Dragon Inn — tasted spicy and cold after walking in the sun. Lunch was a buffet in a big white marquee: roast veggies, lamb stew, crusty bread. I ate too much.

The drive to Waitomo got quieter — maybe everyone was full or just sleepy from the road. The air changed near the caves: cooler, damp-smelling even before we went underground. Inside Waitomo Glowworm Caves our group hushed up fast; you kind of have to when you see those tiny blue lights overhead. Our guide had this way of pausing so you’d listen harder — said the glowworms are older than most buildings in Auckland. The boat ride under all that silent blue is something I still think about when things get loud back home.
