The experience
Mount Eden sits at 196 metres, the highest of Auckland's 52 volcanic cones, and the summit gives you views across both harbours and the city spread below. From there the tour moves into Cornwall Park, the largest volcanic park in the city, where One Tree Hill rises inside it and native trees and animals fill the space. Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park at Mission Bay opens east-to-west panorama views and the memorial to New Zealand's first Labour prime minister overlooks the Waitemata Harbour.
The Auckland Harbour Bridge crosses the water that separates the central business district from the North Shore. On the far side, Devonport is a seaside village with boutique shops and cafés, and North Head Historic Reserve sits beyond it: old military tunnels run through the headland, WWII history is marked throughout, and the summit climb rewards you with panoramic views back across Auckland and the harbour. The morning tour includes Holy Trinity Cathedral, a Pacific-Gothic structure unique in the world, and St. Mary Church built almost entirely from native New Zealand kauri timber in Gothic style. The afternoon tour visits the Winter Garden instead due to closing times.
The War Memorial Museum closes out the day with Māori carvings, Pacific legends, exhibitions spanning from dinosaurs to modern history, and live cultural performances. The rooftop offers picture-perfect views of the city. A live guide in English or Korean travels with the group, and the air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and drops you off at your accommodation.
Is this one for you?The morning departure gets you to all five volcanic sites and the cathedral before afternoon closing times. Choose the afternoon slot if you prefer a later start and don't mind the Winter Garden substitution. Both departures run seven hours, so plan the rest of your day around a full commitment.
