The experience

The day starts with a drive out of Auckland, your guide pointing out city highlights as you leave, then heads south through the Waikato: farmland that stretches across rolling hills with rivers, mountains and farm animals visible from the road. The minibus is air-conditioned and stocked with bottled water and snacks for the journey.

At Hobbiton, you board one of the site's green buses for a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour led by a Hobbiton staff guide. You walk through the Shire's pastures, step into 44 hobbit holes, see the gardens and hear the behind-the-scenes stories of the films. The tour ends at The Green Dragon Inn, where you get a cold drink included. The set sits on 12 acres with uneven surfaces and moderate walking involved: comfortable shoes matter here.

After Hobbiton, the route passes through Rotorua (the town famous for its corrugated iron sculptures), then enters Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland. Here the landscape shifts completely: you see Champagne Pool with its vivid orange, yellow and green mineral hues, Devil's Bath, steaming mud pools and geothermal craters. The colours come from mineral-rich waters and volcanic activity: the pools reach around 74°C.
