The experience
Wagashi is a Japanese tradition spanning over a thousand years, and nerikiri (the sweets you'll make) are among the most intricate. Yuki, who hosts the class in her home, is the only instructor teaching wagashi in Sapporo. She's appeared on TV, radio and in newspapers for her skill. You'll learn the hand techniques that shape these delicate confections, working with all the tools provided. The class runs two hours and includes a welcome cup of green tea.
You pick between a shared class with other travelers or a completely private session, depending on what suits your pace. The recipe goes home with you so you can make wagashi again. Yuki also teaches a flower sushi roll class if you want to try something else on another visit: that one is easier than the sweets class. Public transportation runs near the workshop, though you'll arrange your own way there from your hotel.
What’s included

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Japanese.
What exactly is nerikiri, and why is it harder to make than other sweets?
Nerikiri is a traditional Japanese sweet shaped by hand into delicate forms, often resembling flowers or seasonal objects. It requires precision and control to shape the soft paste without it tearing or losing its form, which is why the wagashi class takes two hours to learn the technique properly.
Do I need any cooking experience to take this class?
No prior experience is required. Yuki teaches the techniques from the start, and all tools are provided. The class is designed for anyone interested in learning the craft, whether you've made sweets before or not.
What's the difference between the shared class and the private class?
The shared class has other travelers present, while the completely private class is just you and Yuki. Choose private if you want one-on-one instruction or prefer a smaller group. Choose shared if you'd like to meet other people and don't mind learning alongside them.
Is the class taught in English?
Yes, Yuki teaches in both English and Japanese, so you can choose whichever language you're more comfortable with when you book.
Can I eat what I make, or is it just for display?
The nerikiri you make are real wagashi and meant to be eaten. You'll enjoy them during the class with green tea, and the techniques you learn are the same ones used to create wagashi sold in shops.
