The experience
Yuki runs a sushi roll preparation school in Sapporo where you work at a hands-on workshop to learn how to make decorative sushi rolls. She's an experienced instructor who has appeared on television and demonstrated her craft at the 65th anniversary celebration of Sapporo and Portland's sister city partnership. You'll get English instruction throughout, and all the ingredients are provided. You just bring your focus and your appetite to learn.
The class runs two hours. You'll receive an apron to wear, English-language recipes to take home, and a welcome drink. Everything you make during the workshop comes home with you, so you can recreate the rolls for friends or family once you're back. If you have dietary concerns (allergies, vegan or vegetarian preferences), let the school know ahead of time and they'll adjust the ingredients.
Beyond the core sushi rolls, you can add options at checkout: Hokkaido branded beef, rice balls with steamed rice, or a selection of side dishes paired with miso soup (where you'll also learn to make dashi, the soup stock, from scratch). There's also an option to learn traditional Bento box decoration in the Shokado style and take home your own decorated Bento. Some options include a private class format if you'd rather not join others, and at least one option includes pickup from your hotel.
