The experience

Kanae's open kitchen is where you'll spend the afternoon learning to cook. She'll walk you through preparing an authentic Hokkaido meal: either a traditional Japanese spread with teriyaki chicken, kinpira-gobo, agedashi tofu, pickled vegetables and miso soup, or local Hokkaido specialties like soup curry, chan chan yaki, rice-stuffed squid and pork donburi. The cooking portion runs about an hour to an hour and a half, and Kanae shares family recipes and Japanese techniques as you work. She meets you at Maruyama-koen station and brings you to her home in one of Sapporo's quieter residential neighborhoods.

After cooking, you sit down together to eat what you've made, with a welcome drink when you arrive and 1–2 glasses of local alcohol included. This is a private experience, so it's just you and your group with Kanae. She speaks English and Japanese and is happy to adjust the menu for vegetarian or vegan preferences if you let her know when booking. Her car fits up to four guests plus the driver, so groups of five or more will need to take a taxi from the station and follow her to the house.

Is this one for you?The cooking takes an hour to an hour and a half, so you'll be on your feet in the kitchen for part of the experience, then seated to eat. This works well for travelers who want hands-on time learning to cook rather than watching a demonstration, and for groups of up to four people traveling together.
