The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the citrus smell—sharp and sweet, almost fizzy in the air as our tuk tuk pulled up to this old lemon grove just outside Sorrento. Our guide, Marco, waved us over with a grin and handed out tiny glasses of lemonade that tasted like summer itself. I tried a slice of lemon dipped in sugar (they said it’s “how Nonna does it”) and honestly, I thought my face would pucker inside out. But then you get used to it—the bite wakes you up.
We bumped along narrow lanes to a family farm where they make cheese by hand. I watched Signora Lucia twist mozzarella into braids so fast her fingers blurred. She let me try (mine looked more like a knot than anything edible), but she just laughed and gave me a wink. The provolone was salty and creamy, especially with salami and a splash of local wine. There was this moment when everyone went quiet tasting bread dipped in olive oil—just the crunch and the sound of birds somewhere behind us.
The pizza place came next—warm inside from the oven, flour dust hanging in the air. We each got to stretch our own dough (harder than it looks), pile on sauce and cheese, then slide it into the wood-fired oven. My crust came out lopsided but tasted perfect anyway. Dessert was simple: something sweet with coffee, then limoncello poured into cold glasses back at the grove while Marco explained his family’s recipe—he wouldn’t give away all the secrets though.
What’s included
Your day includes hands-on demonstrations at each stop: making cheese at a family farm, shaping your own pizza in a real kitchen, plus tastings of lemonade, olive oil on bread, provolone with salami and wine. Tuk tuk rides between locations are covered as well as dessert and limoncello to finish—and hotel pickup can be arranged if needed.
