Step-by-step itinerary

Wine tasting and food pairing in Rome

  • Arrive at Trastevere restaurant
  • Learn about Italian wines
  • Taste five wines with food pairings
  • Sample pecorino Romano and Barolo cheese
  • Taste 30 years aged balsamic vinegar and truffles
  • Enjoy artisanal gelato dessert
  • Listen to expert guide's wine stories

The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the clink of glasses echoing off old stone walls—Trastevere always feels like it’s humming, but inside this little restaurant it was softer, almost conspiratorial. Our guide, Paolo, had that Roman way of talking with his hands—he waved us over to a table already set with slices of pecorino Romano and something he called Filettuccio barolo (I probably pronounced it wrong; he grinned anyway). The air smelled faintly of fried cod and balsamic vinegar—thirty years old, apparently—which I never thought could actually make my mouth water until that moment.

I’ll admit, I thought wine tasting might be a bit stiff. But Paolo started pouring Frascati superiore and told us about his uncle who still picks grapes outside Rome—suddenly it felt more like being at someone’s kitchen table than a formal tasting. We tried Barolo next (it tasted almost smoky?), then Cesanese from Lazio. Each glass came with some food: truffles on bread, a drizzle of syrupy balsamic over cheese. At one point I got the giggles trying to guess the flavors—Paolo said “just trust your nose,” which is harder than you’d think when everything smells so good.

By the time dessert rolled around—a scoop of pistachio gelato that melted too fast—I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once. The whole thing lasted maybe two hours but felt longer in that good way where you lose track of time. There were locals at the next table arguing about football (loudly), which somehow made everything feel even more Roman. I still think about that last sip of prosecco Belta paired with something salty—can’t remember what exactly—and how nice it was not to rush.

What’s included

Your evening includes five Italian wines from regions across Italy—Barolo, Frascati superiore, Cesanese, Cacchione and prosecco Belta—with thoughtfully paired bites like pecorino Romano cheese, Filettuccio barolo cured meat, 30-year aged balsamic vinegar drizzled over truffles or bread and crispy fried cod fish. You’ll finish with creamy artisanal gelato before heading back out into Rome’s lively streets.
