The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Naples hotel or port, then heads to Herculaneum, the smaller of the two buried Roman cities. Preserved by volcanic mud rather than ash, it holds intact buildings, bath complexes and market spaces that Pompeii's excavations never found. You'll see the Villa of the Papyri with its ancient scrolls and the House of the Deer, its sculptures still standing. What's the difference between Herculaneum and Pompeii on this tour?

Herculaneum is smaller and was buried by volcanic mud, which preserved buildings, mosaics and frescoes in exceptional detail. You can see intact villas, bath complexes and market spaces. Pompeii is vast and was buried by ash. It's an open-air museum where you walk through the Forum, temples and streets, but the preservation is less complete. Both are on the same tour, so you see how the same eruption affected two different Roman cities.

Do I need to buy entrance tickets separately, or are they included?
