The Experience

I didn’t expect the smell of old earth at Herculaneum to hit me first — kind of musty but not unpleasant, like a cellar that’s been waiting for centuries. Our driver, Antonio, joked that the Romans would’ve had better roads than Naples today (he’s probably right). Walking those narrow streets with him pointing out mosaics I’d have missed on my own made it feel less like a museum and more like someone’s neighborhood. The colors in some of the frescoes are still so bright — I kept thinking, “How is this even real?”

Climbing up Mount Vesuvius was a bit more effort than I thought (my shoes are still dusty), but the breeze near the crater was cool and sharp, almost metallic. There were school kids laughing at their teacher’s stories about the last eruption — apparently locals call it “the Good Giant,” which feels weird when you’re staring into its mouth. The view over Naples and the bay is just… well, I still think about that silence up there. It’s not really quiet, but it feels like it should be.

Pompeii in the afternoon was busy but not overwhelming. Our guide steered us away from the biggest crowds and into these side streets where you could see old graffiti scratched into stone. He told us about daily life here — markets, bathhouses, even a bakery with flour still stuck in its millstones. There was this moment in the amphitheater where everyone just stopped talking for a second; maybe it was the light or just tired feet, but it felt heavy in a good way. By then my water bottle was empty and my phone nearly dead — both signs of a full day.
