The Experience

We were already winding through those impossible curves above the sea when our driver, Marco, pointed out a lemon grove clinging to the hillside — “That’s where they make limoncello,” he said, grinning. I could smell something citrusy even with the windows up. The road from Naples to Amalfi is famous for being dramatic, but it’s also just… alive. Old men in blue shirts arguing at a bus stop, scooters zipping past like they’re late for something important. The first stop was Ravello — honestly, I’d never heard of it before. It felt quiet in a way that made you lower your voice without thinking.

We wandered into Villa Rufolo and I almost tripped on an uneven stone step (Marco laughed; I pretended not to care). The gardens there are wild and neat at the same time, if that makes sense. There was this faint smell of wet earth after last night’s rain. A couple sat on a bench listening to some distant piano — apparently Ravello is called the City of Music? Didn’t expect that. The view from the Infinity Terrace at Villa Cimbrone made me stop talking for once; you can see all the way down to the water where tiny boats look like confetti.

Back in the car, we wound down towards Amalfi itself. It’s strange how white everything looks under that southern sun — houses stacked like sugar cubes, laundry flapping between alleys. Marco told us about Amalfi’s old days as a Maritime Republic (he seemed proud), and when we reached the Duomo di Sant’Andrea he insisted we climb the steps even though my legs were jelly by then. Worth it just for people-watching from up top: kids chasing pigeons, a woman selling paper cones of fried anchovies (I tried one — salty and perfect).

The last stretch was Positano, which really does look like someone poured out a box of pastel crayons onto a cliffside. We had an hour or so to wander and get lost among shops selling linen shirts and ceramics painted with lemons (everything here seems lemon-themed). There was this little café where I ordered espresso and tried saying “grazie mille” properly — got corrected twice by the barista but she smiled anyway. By then I’d stopped checking my phone for time; sometimes you just want to let yourself drift a bit.
