The Experience

We rolled out of Naples just after 9, windows down because the air already felt sweet — not hot yet, but you could smell lemons somewhere. Our driver, Marco, pointed out Vesuvius in the rearview like he was introducing an old friend. The road hugged the cliffs so tight I kept holding my breath on the curves (he laughed — “I do this every day!”). First stop was Sorrento. There’s a salty breeze here that sticks to your skin. My partner bought a lemon soap that made our whole bag smell like summer for days after.

Amalfi was quieter by afternoon, maybe because the church bells had just finished ringing when we arrived. We wandered through cool stone corridors and bought pastries dusted with sugar — I think they were called sfogliatella? Anyway, flaky and gone in two bites. Marco told us stories about pirates (apparently real ones) who used to raid these towns centuries ago. On the way back to Naples, everyone got quiet watching the sun start to dip behind the cliffs — not much chatter then, just tired and happy in that good way travel does to you.
