The Experience

The first thing I noticed in Herculaneum wasn’t the ruins — it was the way the air smelled, a bit earthy but sharp, almost like wet stone after rain. Our guide (Francesco, who grew up nearby) waved us over to a mosaic floor and said his grandfather used to sneak in before there were fences. He pointed out scorch marks on old marble — “from the eruption,” he said quietly, and for a second I could almost hear that ancient panic echoing off the walls. I tried to picture people living here, buying bread or arguing about olives or whatever Romans did. It’s smaller than Pompeii but feels more… personal? Like you’re trespassing in someone’s house.

After that we drove up toward Mount Vesuvius. Looking down into the crater felt weirdly quiet — you expect drama but it’s just this huge open mouth in the earth with little wisps of steam curling up. I didn’t say much at the rim; nobody did.

Packing into Pompeii near afternoon, there were more people but somehow it didn’t matter. The sun hit those old stones hard — everything looked faded gold. We wandered through what used to be shops and houses; our guide told us about the Temple of Apollo and pointed out graffiti scratched into a wall (“Roman teenagers,” he grinned). There was this moment by an old fountain where I ran my hand along the edge — smooth from centuries of use — and thought about how all these lives just stopped one day. Kind of heavy, honestly. But then a kid nearby dropped his gelato on his sandal and everyone laughed, so… life goes on.
