The Experience

I’ll be honest — I booked this Pompeii, Sorrento & Positano day trip mostly because I couldn’t decide which place to see first. My friend Luca met us at the port in Naples (he’s got that calm Neapolitan way of making you feel like you’re not late, even if you are). The van was small, just a few of us — no microphone or flag-waving guide, thank god. We drove out of Naples and suddenly the city noise faded behind lemon groves and those wild cliffs. The air changed too; it smelled like salt and coffee from someone’s open window.

Sorrento was our first real stop. I wandered off down an alley lined with orange tiles and tiny shops selling limoncello — the sweet kind that makes your teeth ache a little. An old man outside a bakery handed me a piece of warm sfogliatella (I think he liked my terrible Italian). Our guide pointed out the Church of Saint Antonino but honestly I was more distracted by the sunlight bouncing off the domes and all these locals chatting over espresso. It’s one of those places where time feels slower, but maybe that’s just how southern Italy works.

Next was Positano — or at least the overlook above it. There’s this spot where everyone stops for photos but it didn’t feel forced; you can actually hear the sea below if you listen past all the laughter. Someone in our group tried to pronounce ‘Positano’ like a local and we all cracked up (even Luca). The colors are unreal: pink houses stacked on green hillsides, laundry flapping everywhere. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the subway back home.

Pompeii was last. With skip-the-line tickets, we walked right in — no waiting under that hot sun. You get an audio guide so you can wander at your own pace, which I liked because I could pause wherever something caught my eye (the old bakery ovens still smell faintly of dust and ash). By then my feet were tired but my head was full; there’s something strange about standing where everything stopped so suddenly two thousand years ago. Afterward Luca rounded us up for the drive back to Naples — he played soft Neapolitan songs on the radio as we watched Vesuvius fade into dusk.
