The Experience

I was honestly a bit nervous as we waited outside the Starhotels Terminus in Naples—maybe because I’d seen Vesuvius from the city and it just looks so... there. Our tour leader, Claudia, handed out tickets and audioguides for Mount Vesuvius right away. The drive up was kind of quiet; you could see the volcano getting bigger through the window, and someone in our group joked about needing better shoes (I definitely should’ve listened). The air changed as we climbed—more pine, less city. At the top, I could smell sulfur faintly, like burnt matches on a windy day. The crater is huge. I stood there longer than I meant to, listening to my audioguide but mostly just staring down into it. It’s hard not to think about what happened here.

After coming back down (my legs were already feeling it), we had a quick lunch stop—nothing fancy, but the pizza was hot and salty and exactly what I needed. Then we met our archaeologist guide at Pompeii’s Porta Marina Superiore entrance. She waved us over with this big smile and launched straight into stories about Roman life that made me forget how tired I was. Walking through the ancient streets of Pompeii—Via dell’Abbondanza especially—you can almost imagine people rushing around you. There are bits that feel oddly familiar: graffiti on walls, little fountains at corners. The granary still has marble tables scattered about; our guide pointed out a cast of a dog curled up by a tree that made everyone go quiet for a second.

The Lupanar brothel got more laughs than I expected (the wall paintings are... let’s say direct), and Li laughed when I tried to pronounce “Lupanar” in Italian—definitely butchered it. The Great Theatre of Pompeii is massive; you stand there imagining crowds shouting or actors whispering lines that echo up into the open sky. By then my feet were sore but my head was buzzing with all these half-formed images of ancient lives layered under dust and sunlight. We ended somewhere near the Teatro Piccolo—I lost track because I kept stopping to look at shadows on old stones or listen to our guide’s stories trailing off into little side notes about her own digs in the area.

I still think about standing at the edge of Vesuvius’ crater, wind whipping my hair around, trying to picture what it sounded like when everything changed in 79 AD. If you want a day trip from Naples that feels both heavy and strangely alive—with real people guiding you every step—this Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius tour is probably it.
