The experience

You meet outside Starhotels Terminus in Naples and travel by minibus to Mount Vesuvius. Once there, you get your admission ticket and audioguide, then hike the slopes up to the crater's edge. The audioguide narrates as you climb. A tour leader stays with the group the whole way. From the top, you look out over the Bay of Naples and the landscape that surrounds it: the same view that existed before the eruption that buried Pompeii in 79 AD. The hike itself is the point. It takes physical effort and a moderate level of fitness, but the crater and the panorama are what people come for.

After descending, the group stops for a quick lunch break before heading to Pompeii. You enter at Porta Marina Superiore with skip-the-line access, no queue at the gate, and meet your archaeologist guide for a 2-hour walk through the site. The guide takes you through the Basilica, the ancient main square, the granary (where you see marble tables, fountain basins, and plaster casts of victims and animals from the eruption), and down Via dell'Abbondanza, the main street. You visit the House of Menander, one of the preserved domus inside the ruins; the Lupanar, the famous brothel; the Teatro Piccolo; and the Great Theatre of Pompeii. The guide explains what each space was, how Romans lived in it, and what the ash tells us about the moment the city stopped.

The whole day runs 7 hours. Round-trip transport, Mount Vesuvius entry and audioguide, Pompeii skip-the-line admission, and both guides are included. You'll need a valid passport or ID, and children must be at least 6 years old. If weather closes Mount Vesuvius, the operator will notify you and offer an alternative activity instead. If you're traveling with luggage, store it separately, not all minibuses have a compartment for it.
