Summary

Wander Naples’ lively streets then descend into ancient tunnels

You’ll meet your guide at Piazza Bellini before wandering Naples’ buzzing streets and heading below ground to explore ancient tunnels with your small group. Feel the cool air of Naples Underground, walk Spaccanapoli’s lively stretch, taste local pastries, and end among artisans’ nativity scenes—each moment layered with stories you’ll remember long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I almost missed Piazza Bellini because I got distracted by a guy playing trumpet outside a café — the kind of jazzy chaos that just feels so…Naples. Our guide, Antonella, waved us over with a grin and immediately started telling us about the graffiti around the square (she called it “the city’s second language”). I liked that she didn’t rush us. Someone in our group was late, but nobody seemed to care. That’s Naples, I guess.

We zigzagged through narrow lanes, dodging Vespas and catching whiffs of espresso and frying dough from open windows. Antonella pointed out crumbling archways and told stories about old feuds between neighborhoods — she made Spaccanapoli sound like a living thing, not just a street. Then we ducked down into the Naples Underground. The air changed instantly: cool, damp, echoey. My sneakers squeaked on ancient stone steps. Down there it’s quiet in a way that makes your ears ring a little. She showed us faded Roman walls and explained how people once hid here during bombings — I touched one of the bricks and felt this weird shiver thinking about all those lives layered beneath my feet.

Coming back up into sunlight was almost blinding. The noise hit me first — scooters honking, someone shouting for their kid, church bells somewhere close by. We wandered along Spaccanapoli again; Antonella stopped to buy sfogliatella from an old bakery (she insisted we try it warm). Flaky pastry dusted my shirt but honestly who cares? At San Gregorio Armeno, the nativity scene shops were bursting with tiny figurines — some looked like footballers or politicians mixed in with angels. Antonella laughed when I tried to say “presepe” right (I definitely didn’t). It all felt messy and alive in the best way.
