Step-by-step itinerary
Naples to Pompeii guided tour
- Pick up in Naples city center
- Travel by air-conditioned bus to Pompeii
- Guided tour of Pompeii ruins
- Visit traditional cameo workshop
- Return to Naples by bus
The Experience
You're picked up at your Naples hotel or one of several meeting points in the city center, where the driver holds a banner with the tour name. The air-conditioned bus includes free bottled water and a brief introduction to Naples and the surrounding landscape during the drive. Your entrance ticket to Pompeii is already included, so you skip the ticket queue at the gate and start exploring immediately with your guide waiting at the entrance.
The guided portion lasts approximately 2 hours. Your archaeologist leads you through the ancient Roman streets, pointing out villas, temples, bathhouses, markets and the Forum—the civic heart of the city. You'll see the plaster casts of victims from the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, a stark record of the moment the city was buried and preserved. The guide brings the daily life of the Romans back into focus: how they lived, worked, gathered and died in these spaces.
Before heading back to Naples, you have free time at a traditional cameo workshop, where artisans demonstrate the intricate craft of carving precious shells by hand. This is also where you can use restroom facilities. The return journey to Naples is the same relaxed ride back to your original pickup point, with water available throughout.

Is this one for you?Book the morning departures if you want the archaeological site before the midday crowds and a full afternoon free after returning to Naples. Choose the small-group option if a live guide matters more to you than a larger tour—the smaller departures guarantee a licensed archaeologist rather than an audioguide, though both cover the same ground.

What exactly is the plaster cast display at Pompeii?
The plaster casts are molds of the victims of the 79 AD eruption, made by pouring plaster into the spaces where bodies lay buried under ash and pumice. They preserve the final moments and postures of people who died when Mount Vesuvius erupted, offering a direct and moving record of the disaster.
Will I have a live guide or an audioguide on this tour?
A live licensed guide in your chosen language is guaranteed if your group has at least six participants. If your group is smaller than six, an official interactive audioguide will be provided instead, allowing you to explore at your own pace with recorded commentary.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?
The tour includes hotel pickup from Naples, the entrance fee to Pompeii, bottled water on the bus, and the 2-hour guided tour or audioguide inside the ruins. Food, drinks and gratuities are not included. The cameo workshop visit is free to browse, though items are available for purchase.
How much walking is involved, and what's the terrain like?
The 2-hour guided section involves moderate walking over ancient Roman streets, many of which are uneven stone. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, pregnancy, or significant mobility problems. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness to comfortably complete the ruins portion.
What time will I be picked up, and when does the tour end?
Pickup times vary depending on which option you select—choices include 8:30 am, 10:30 am and 1:15 pm departures. Your exact pickup time and location will be confirmed by email after booking. The entire tour, including the bus ride and Pompeii visit, takes 3.5 hours, so you'll be back in Naples by early to mid-afternoon depending on your departure time.
Can I book this tour if I'm arriving late or have a short window in Naples?
If your booking is confirmed fewer than 8 hours before the start time, the only available pickup point is Starhotels Terminus in Piazza Garibaldi. For other bookings, you can choose from several meeting points in the city center. Confirm your preferred pickup location on the dashboard after booking.
