You're picked up at your Naples hotel or one of several meeting points in the city center, where the driver holds a banner with the tour name. The air-conditioned bus includes free bottled water and a brief introduction to Naples and the surrounding landscape during the drive. Your entrance ticket to Pompeii is already included, so you skip the ticket queue at the gate and start exploring immediately with your guide waiting at the entrance.
The guided portion lasts approximately 2 hours. Your archaeologist leads you through the ancient Roman streets, pointing out villas, temples, bathhouses, markets and the Forum: the civic heart of the city. You'll see the plaster casts of victims from the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, a stark record of the moment the city was buried and preserved. Before heading back to Naples, you have free time at a traditional cameo workshop, where artisans demonstrate the intricate craft of carving precious shells by hand. This is also where you can use restroom facilities. The return journey to Naples is the same relaxed ride back to your original pickup point, with water available throughout.
