The experience

The boat leaves with just you and your companion, steered by a sailor who knows the island's quieter corners. You'll pass the Faraglioni (three towering rock formations that rise straight from the water), and slip through the Natural Arch, a Paleolithic rock formation on the east coast. The route takes in the Green Grotto, where you can swim or climb the cliffs inside what looks like an enormous liquid emerald, and the Red Grotto, which gets its color from the corals staining the rocks. The Blue Grotto is on request and depends on opening times, sea conditions and waiting queues. If you want to enter, tickets are sold at the cave entrance.

You have time to swim at any of the stops, and snorkelling equipment is on board if you want it. Life jackets are available, along with soft drinks and bottled water. If you'd rather stay aboard, you can bring a picnic and eat while the boat drifts. The whole tour runs three hours, which gives you enough time to linger at the grottoes without rushing through them.

If you're arriving from Positano by ferry, book a departure after 10 AM. The morning ferry is often late or cancelled, and we can't guarantee the tour if you arrive after the scheduled start time. The boat is small and stays private to the two of you, so there's no waiting for other groups or adjusting the pace to strangers.

Can we actually swim in the grottoes, or is it just looking from the boat?

The Green Grotto and Red Grotto both allow swimming. You can jump in the water or climb the cliffs inside the Green Grotto if you want to. Snorkelling equipment is provided on board. The Blue Grotto is view-only from the boat entrance.

What happens if the Blue Grotto is closed when we go?

The Blue Grotto is optional and depends on opening times, sea conditions and waiting queues in peak seasons. If it's closed or the queue is too long, your sailor will skip it and spend more time at the other grottoes. Entry tickets cost 18 euros per person and are bought at the cave entrance, not included in the tour price.

Is there food on the boat, or do we need to bring our own?

The boat provides soft drinks and bottled water. You're welcome to bring a picnic and eat on board. There's no lunch service included in the tour.

How many people fit on the boat?

The boat holds a maximum of two people per booking, so it's just you and your companion plus the sailor.

What if we're arriving late from another island?

If you're coming from Positano, book a departure after 10 AM, since the morning ferry is often delayed or cancelled. We cannot guarantee the tour if you arrive after the scheduled start time.
