The Experience
The skipper met us at the Sorrento port with a thermos of coffee and a grin—he'd already checked the weather, the swell, and where the crowds weren't going. That's the thing about a private boat tour from Sorrento: you're not following a schedule or a flag. The Gozzo Jeranto 900 Open holds a maximum of 12 passengers, which means there's actual room to move, and your skipper knows the water well enough to adjust the day on the fly. You pick your departure time, your departure point (Sorrento, Positano, or Naples), and then the boat becomes yours.
The run to Capri takes about an hour, and along the way the skipper points out the coastline—the villas clinging to the cliffs, the villages you can't reach by road. Once you're there, the stops unfold without rush. The White Grotto and Green Grotto come first, and you can swim right outside the Green Grotto in water so clear it feels like you're floating in air. The Blue Grotto is optional (there's an €18 per-person fee to enter), but if you go, the skipper will navigate you through the entrance and you'll see why people talk about that electric blue light. Then you cruise past Marina Piccola on the southern side, and the Faraglioni sea stacks—those three massive rock formations rising out of the water—and if the conditions are right, the boat goes straight through the hole in the middle one.
Between stops there's time to snorkel, to sit on the bow with a cold drink, to do nothing at all. The boat carries wine, beer, prosecco, water, snacks, and fruit. Your skipper will suggest restaurants on the island if you want to go ashore for lunch (there's a €150 disembarkation fee if you do), or you can stay on the water. On the way back to Sorrento, Positano, or Naples—whichever port you left from—you get prosecco and the kind of quiet that only happens when you're moving away from land.
If you're staying in a Sorrento hotel, pickup and drop-off are included. For Naples or Positano departures, the skipper waits for you at the port. The whole day is flexible—you're not locked into a route or a timeline, which is exactly why people book a private boat instead of joining a group.
What’s included
